Research conducted by Verizon Wireless also uncovers a disconnect between the gifts mom wants this Mother’s Day versus the gifts their kids think they want.
GREENVILLE, S.C. – A new survey by Verizon Wireless, conducted in time for Mother’s Day on Sunday, reveals that wireless devices have replaced flowers and cards as the preferred gift for 70 percent of moms. According to the survey, which polled 6,000 moms, 95 percent of moms say that wireless devices make their lives easier, citing apps that help them stay organized, keep their kids safe, stay in shape and track the latest shopping deals.
“Moms are experts at balancing busy lives and keeping daily tasks on track. Therefore, our survey confirms what many of us have perhaps known for a while, smartphones and tablets are ideal tools that help mom get the most out of work and play,” said Leigh Anne Lanier of Verizon Wireless. “This survey found that 19 percent of moms would love a new smartphone for Mother’s Day, and Verizon is helping dad and kids get her the gift she’ll love by offering up to $200 when any smartphone is traded-in during the purchase of the newest Samsung Galaxy S6.”
Kids and Moms Don’t See Eye-to-Eye on Mother’s Day Gifts
While it may come as no surprise that kids and moms are on different wavelengths when it comes to technology, the Verizon survey revealed a startling disconnect between the type of gift mom says she wants and the gift kids plan to give her. While 70 percent of moms say they prefer a smartphone or tablet for Mother’s Day, just 11 percent of kids are planning to give their mom the gift of wireless tech this year.
Kids Question Mom’s Tech Savviness
While moms love wireless technology, their kids don’t always consider mom to be tech-savvy. The survey found that while 50 percent of moms consider themselves “tech-savvy,” only 26 percent of kids describe mom this way. For moms who would like to learn how to improve their knowledge of their smartphone or tablet, Verizon offers all wireless users, regardless of carrier, free wireless workshops to help them get the most out of their new devices. Nearly Two-Thirds of Moms Report Using Smartphones and Tablets for Gaming
While kids may not realize how much mom depends on her wireless devices, according to the survey, kids do know how mom uses her smartphone or tablet. Kids correctly predicted the types of apps that moms use. Perhaps the most surprising finding is that gaming apps are most popular with 60 percent of moms playing games on their smartphone or tablet. Other findings: 53 percent of moms report favoring shopping apps, 48 percent prefer music apps and 41 percent cite lifestyle apps that help with cooking, planning and organizing.
